The Matlaboul Fawzaïni National Hospital in Touba now has a new, modern hospital building, which will be operational on 26 March 2025. Built and equipped by FONSIS through its subsidiary POLIMED, this six-storey building will significantly enhance the range of healthcare services available in the region.
With a capacity of 132 beds, the building houses the surgery, maternity, intensive care and operating theatre departments. It will improve patient care and working conditions for staff. Hospital Director Dr Makhtar Lô pointed out that the old hospital capacity had been exceeded, particularly in the maternity ward, where the occupancy rate regularly exceeded 100%.
The project was carried out under a Public-Private Partnership between the State of Senegal and FONSIS, with the support of the Ministries of Finance and Budget and of Health and Social Action. Entirely financed and executed by Senegalese players, the building represents an investment of FCFA 9.6 billion. It comprises 70 rooms, 6 operating theatres, 9 intensive care beds, accommodation suites, rest areas for carers and living quarters for medical staff.
The new building also incorporates the latest generation of medical and technical equipment, a digital infrastructure to help digitise the patient pathway, and a wastewater treatment plant connected to the ONAS network. This project is part of the wider hospital modernisation programme piloted by FONSIS, which in the coming weeks will see the handover of the Tivaouane hospitals and, later, the Aristide Le Dantec hospital.
